My Junk Drawer

Houston, We Have A Fan!

I was born just a few weeks after Apollo 13 returned safely to Earth, and I’ve been hooked on space exploration ever since.

When the Shuttle program began, I absorbed everything I could. I still remember standing outside my school, looking up as Enterprise flew overhead on the back of a jet. I had a world map in my bedroom and tracked every mission like the displays in Houston.

I also remember the harder moments, watching one shuttle explode on launch, and years later, seeing another break apart during reentry. When the Shuttle program ended with no clear replacement, it felt like something important had been lost.

A few years ago, I had the chance to meet the living Apollo astronauts, including one of my heroes, Gene Kranz. It was a banner day I’ll never forget.

Today, I watched a NASA vehicle return to Earth after a historic journey to the Moon. When the parachutes opened and splashdown was confirmed, I’ll admit I got emotional.

We are back. Truly back.

I know some will say we should focus on fixing things here on Earth first. I understand that perspective; there’s truth in it. But the innovation, science, and progress driven by space exploration have shaped the world we live in today. It’s part of how we move forward, not a distraction from it.

My hope is that we keep going and we continue to explore, innovate, and build toward something bigger. I worry about the current climate and how easily things can be politicized. But I still believe in what we can accomplish together.

No matter what, I’ll be here watching, cheering, and believing.

We’re back. And I’ve got my NASA foam finger ready!
